Scripture and Interpretation > Linguistics > Discourse Analysis

  • Linguistics and Biblical Hebrew. Ed. Walter R. Bodine. Winona Lake, IN: Eisenbrauns., 1992. General Collection PJ4521 .L56 1992. A useful set of articles on topics related to discourse analysis (textlinguistics). The article by Randall Buth entitled “Functional Grammar, Hebrew and Aramaic: An Integrated, Textlinguistic Approach to Syntax," provides an excellent overview of the field.

  • “Linguistic Features of Hebrew Narrative: A Discourse Analysis of Narrative from the Classical Period." Stephen G.Dempster. Ph.D. diss., University of Toronto, 1985. Microfiche 221.601 .D399L. This dissertation is a bit dated, but is still a good example of a rigorous methodology that confines itself to what can be demonstrated from the biblical text. He covers the Succession Narrative (2 Sam 9-20 and 1 Kgs 1-2).

  • “Linguistics & Exegesis of the Old Testament." Peter J. Gentry. Paper presented to Toronto Baptist Seminary, 1990. This paper is not published, but is available from Dr. Peter Gentry at Southern Seminary. Like Stephen Dempster's study (mentioned above), Dr. Gentry examines a limited set of parameters within the text of Exodus 1-14. This study provides a useful introduction, via example, of how discourse analysis approaches the biblical text.

  • Narrative Structure and Discourse Constellations. Roy Heller. Winona Lake, IN: Eisenbrauns, 2004. General Collection 492.45 .H367n. Heller develops a theoretical foundation in conjunction with a text linguistic analysis of the Jospeh Story and the Succession Narrative (2 Sam 9-20 and 1 Kgs 1-2). This is a relatively new field, and as with most discourse analyses, the charge of circularity can be leveled against some of Heller's work. Nevertheless, Heller provides many useful observations and examples of grammatical and syntactic features that provide meaning beyond the sentence level.

  • "A Call to Covenant Love: Text Grammar and Literary Structure in Deuteronomy 5-11." Jason S.DeRouchie. Ph.D. diss., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2005. THESES Ph.D. .D447c. This dissertation has a good overview of the history and recent developments in the field of discourse analysis. Unlike many other studies that focus on narrative, DeRouchie analyzes an extended section of reported speech in Deuteronomy 5-11. His analysis is somewhat incomplete in places, and his criteria contradict each other at times, but overall this is a good resource. A free PDF copy of this dissertation can be obtained by Southern Students.

  • Discourse Analysis and Other Topics in Biblical Greek. D.A. Carson and Stanley E. Porter, eds. Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement Series 113. Sheffield: Sheffield Academic Press, 1995. General Collection PA863 .D57 1995. This set of articles focuses on the New Testament. The article by Moises Silva entitled "Discourse analysis and Philippians," is an especially valuable caution about the practice and possible limitations of discourse analysis.

  • "The Semantics of Verbal Pragmatics." John A. Cook. In Journal of Semitic Studies, 49. no. 2, (2004): 247-73.  SERIALS .J826sem.  This well-written article provides a call for discourse analysis to be grounded firmly in semantics to avoid such dangers as circularity and superficiality.
